3 Ways To Stay Cool When It Gets Hot!

I'm currently down in southern Spain hanging out with my husband’s family… hellooooo 40C+ degree heat (104F+). I enjoy warm weather, but this is just a little too warm for comfort.

I was putting together final touches on a workshop about keeping cool, physically and mentally, I gave last week in one of my corporate wellness programs that got me thinking I should share some cooling tips with you as well this week.

I know I’ve said this before, and I’ll keep saying it, everything is connected.

Our body temperature, for example, and our nervous system are intrinsically connected. When you’re under stress your heart rate will increase and you may start to sweat as your nervous system ramps up to help you fight or flee the situation. When your body is subjected to high temperatures, your heart rate starts to pick up to circulate more blood flow through to your skin and you’ll start to sweat in fighting to keep your body cooler.

In both situations there are similar things we can do help our body find balance.

Here are 3 tools that I suggest to help you cool down—physically and emotionally:

Breathe

Your breath is a powerful tool that can help you calm down in moments of stress or overwhelm and also start to cool down internally. Join me as I lead you through a wonderful cooling breath work practice:

Mindfulness

When things are heating up, whether it’s because of high temperatures or emotionally, take a moment to pause and slow things down. It’s important to take time to tune-in and ground. Take a moment to look out at your surroundings, notice what you can see, hear, touch, smell and taste. And then take a moment just to be in the here and now, noticing all that is arising with compassionate awareness and then letting it go.

Hydrate

Staying hydrated is key to keeping cool, in all senses! Water is your best friend, especially during hot summer days and when you’re feeling stressed. Carry a water bottle with you and sip on it throughout the day.
