What are the benefits to short movement breaks?

You may have noticed that I'm currently holding a 7-day movement challenge, that starts today! But you may also be wondering what the benefit of the challenge might be and why, in your very busy days where you don't have enough time to do what you NEED to do, you should take time to move?

I get you, honestly I do. When I'm really busy and feeling stressed out, the last thing I need to do is add SOMETHING ELSE onto my plate. But hear me out. While it may not seem worthwhile, or possible, in the moment, taking these small movement breaks are actually incredibly beneficial in the long run.

What are the benefits of mindful movement breaks?

  1. You move your body, which is often forgotten when we’ve got SO MUCH to do and feel as though we have no time to do it. These little movement breaks are a great way to feel calmer and more focused.
  2. Taking that break helps us give back more to those around us: family, friends, co-workers, clients, etc.
  3. You start to create a more supportive and compassionate relationship with yourself, because you start to really tune-in and ask yourself, ‘what do I need in this moment?’
  4. Because you’re listening to yourself, mindfully moving and treating yourself with compassion, this majorly helps your mental health. When we’re feeling stressed, this stress gets caught in our body and it leads to tension build up and a lot of other not so delightful symptoms like poor sleep, high blood-pressure, headaches, migraines, etc. which then in turn take their tool on our mental health. It’s all connected. But when we start to do the daily check-in and mindful movement, this helps release the tension we’re holding, and it reminds our brains we can relax and be at ease.
