Do you ever have the feeling that you’re stuck, you’re trying to do lots of things, playing lots of roles, but don’t feel like you’re getting anywhere but landing yourself in Overwhelmed-and-Exhausted-ville.

I completely and utterly understand this feeling. Honestly. I wish I could say that I have only had it happen to me in the past when I was burned out and completely out of touch with myself. And yes, I definitely did have that feeling then and much more often. But realistically, it’s something that comes up periodically even now.

I’m going to share with you an exercise that I do every few weeks to keep myself from getting to that point, I call it:

So how does it My Perfect Day Meditation work?

The idea is to sit down and write our what your perfect day looks like. Give yourself time here! I usually take around 1 hour to write it all out, but it really depends on you.

In detail, write out what you do on that perfect day. This could be a work day, a weekend day, or some other day. And as you write out what happens in that day, also detail HOW YOU FEEL going through the day.

I always start it from the moment I wake up. What I notice on my perfect day, maybe the room I’m in, who’s next to me in bed (in my case my hubby and Pippin, our cat), and how I feel in the instant I wake up. Remember this is your PERFECT day. So in your dream day, how does your dream self feel: physically, mentally, emotionally, maybe even spiritually.

Then continue to write out the rest of your perfect day in as much detail and sensory awareness as you like. If you’re working on establishing a new habit, you can write this out. If you’re looking to do something work wise, write it out. If you’re looking to re-establish a connection or relationship with someone, write it out.

With each activity you do, be sure to also explain how you feel at that moment: knowledgable, energized, happy, empowered, wise, positive, assertive, self-radiant, intelligent, self-assured, decisive, loved… Choose your adjectives of how you want to feel.

My description of my day ends with me falling asleep, and the way I feel as I fall asleep.

After I write it out, I take a few minutes to visualize and embody those feelings, noticing how my body responds to them.

Then I thank myself for giving myself this time to communicate with myself, be compassionate towards myself, and truly love myself. And I notice everything that already appears in my life that is in my perfect day and I send it gratitude. Perhaps it looks slightly different, but it’s there and I cherish it.

Over the next few weeks, I re-read that perfect day to myself and embody the feelings I wrote down. Sometimes I re-read it every day, other times it’s a couple of times a week. Often it depends on how much I need that reminder to love myself and give back to myself. It also helps me remember WHY I’m doing what I’m doing.

Knowing WHY you’re doing something—and the physical, mental and emotional feelings that it creates in you—is SO BENEFICIAL to empowering yourself to take those supportive steps forward to reach the goals you like.

And remember, these perfect days can shift. If after reading it out to yourself you feel things don’t quite suit you anymore, re-write it. This is why I write it out every few weeks. Because life changes, we change and our dreams change. That's okay.

What shouldn’t change is our love for ourselves and our devotion to supporting ourselves with compassion.

This exercise is one I have all my clients do, because it is incredibly powerful in helping each of us reach our goals, whatever they may be.

I invite you to try it out, see what you notice and what you FEEL. Discover your why. It may surprise you to find what you uncover as you go through this exercise.

Happy writing!
