Do you give yourself the time and space you need to allow whatever emotions that are popping up, to pop up? I know I struggle with this, especially when I feel like I’m feeling overwhelmed.

It’s important to keep communicating with yourself. We need to keep those communication lines open, so we’re able to listen and respond to our needs. It’s just as important to have good communication with ourselves as it is with others.

Healthy Communication with ourselves can:

Help you realize when you need to cut down on things that are overwhelming us.

Help you recognize when you need to reach out to others to get the support we need.

Help you celebrate when you’re having good moments/days! Even in the darkest of times, there will be light. Celebrate and treasure the light!

Help you pick the ball back up again if you drop it.

Help you realize when that ball is too heavy for just yourself to lift, so we can ask others to help us.

Help you remember that you are born to be real, not perfect.

Learn to love your imperfections.

So how can we have start to have those healthy conversations with ourselves?

  • Constantly check-in with your breath: is it tight, shallow and fast, is it slow, easy and long or is it something else? If you’re noticing your really tight chested, see if stair step breathing can help release it!
  • Meditation (1 min can be just as beneficial as 20 minutes!)
  • Be mindful while doing tasks like cooking, walking, bathing
  • Practice mindful movement
  • Take breaks and learn to say no to things

These are just a few options, and they don’t have to take long or even be new things we add into our routines, just be a bit more mindful about doing them. When we begin to implement this communication into our life, it can make a huge difference.By creating better communication with ourselves we can better communicate to those around us, especially when it comes to reaching out for help. Asking for support and help from others can be scary and uncomfortable.

It's scary to reach out to other person and admit you are struggling. And so often in our culture this is discouraged. But it is important.

A great way to practice both inner communication and communication with others is through partner yoga.

In partner yoga we have to listen, not only to our partner’s needs, but also to our own so we can best support and connect with each other through the poses. I would love for you to join my husband and I this upcoming Sunday, March 20th, for the monthly partner yoga workshop. In the workshops we use mindful breathing and movement, along with being a little silly and having a laugh, to create a comfortable environment where we can learn to better communicate and connect with ourselves and another.
