Healing and Lightning Storms and What We Can Learn From Them

The other night we had an EPIC thunder and lightning storm. It was as though Thor had come to unleash his pent-up fury upon the city. It was powerful, beautiful and at moments a little frightening—especially one of the strikes that hit right next to our building. Everything lit up white with a deafening BOOM that shook me right down to my core. But boy was it exhilarating.

I sat up until the wee hours of the morning watching the storm. For awhile I even stood under the awning of the terrace door, watching the storm in the distance and getting the occasional drop of rain that swooped in from the side with a gust of wind.
I absolutely love storms (when I know I’m in a safe space). As a girl and even into my university days, I used to drive out to the coast with my Dad to watch the big storms roll into the Oregon Coast. We were careful to stand well away from the crashing waves, but we reveled in the energy and beauty of the storms.
I still go out and watch the storms come across the ocean here in Gijón. I love the feeling of energy that flows through my body. And while in some ways I feel incredibly small and dainty in comparison to the power of the weather, I also feel empowered standing in the wind, feeling the rain slash against my body and the surges of energy zap in the air around me.
Am I weird? Probably, but happily so. Storms can be incredibly dangerous, and it’s important to acknowledge and respect their power. But at the same time it reminds me that we all need those moments of release. And when that release happens, we can feel peace settle over us once again.
Storms happen because there is too much pent-up energy in the environment and the Earth has to release it somehow. Sometimes this is a little release and other times, when there is just too much held over too long, it’s a fury of epic proportions. But when it is released there is a sense of calm. We even have a saying in English, the calm after the storm.
Our bodies are exactly the same. When we hold too much tension and stress our body needs to release it SOMEHOW. Sometimes this shows up as the twitching of an eyelid or a leg shaking. Sometimes it shows up as your stomach inflaming or your heart rate skyrocketing. Sometimes it shows up as a panic attack. And sometimes it’s all of the above and a whole body shut down because it just cannot cope any longer.
We don’t want to get to that point though. We want to be able to release the tension and stress before our body demands a release. We do this through meeting ourselves where we are and consistently showing up for ourselves. We can do this through movement, breath work, mindfulness, meditation, and connection. Connection to ourselves and to our support systems around us.
The Balanced and Thriving monthly membership helps you do just that: create a lasting practice that reduces the severity of storms that stress creates within you. And it helps teach you how to navigate any storms that might arise.
Your body is incredibly intelligent and even if you don’t consciously realize it, it has the power to heal you from the inside out. And that starts with learning how to reduce and manage the storms on a consistent basis.
Sign up before September 18th to get the Early Bird 10€ off the first month of the membership!
Psst. When you join the membership you also get discounts on private therapeutic yoga sessions. So if your storms need a little extra one-on-one support to navigate, you can get the extra guidance and healing support at a reduced rate.
