How Fight, Flight and Freeze Show Up in Our Work Life and What to Do About it

Have you ever experienced those moments when you sit down to work and your mind keeps going to other things. Like, 'Oh! I should check the weather for later today'? Or, 'I need to schedule a check-up appointment with my dentist'? Or, 'Ooo! Someone just responded to my instagram post, I wonder what they said, I should definitely go check it out' (and then get caught up in scrolling for the next 30 mins)?
If you haven’t, I am incredibly impressed. But I think most of us have been there. So why do we do this?
Well, a simple answer is because there is something about what we’re doing that is putting our hackles up in our nervous system and it’s saying “DANGER! Something is scaring me! Get away!”
Just to back up a little bit, I want to put full disclaimer out there: our nervous system is friggen awesome and it does what it does to protect us because it loves us so much.

But sometimes, because of our lifestyles, when we do something new or different our nervous system goes, 'oooh, I dunno about that! I need to protect you, let’s get away from here!' Even though it really doesn't need to.
And so the very convenient distractions, or the overworking (doing everything but the thing that’s tipping out nervous system) start. But it's okay, it's part of how our body functions and it not actually a bad thing.
That being said, what do we do about it? Well, the first thing is to acknowledge what is going on, without judging yourself. Be compassionate (because your nervous system is only doing what it thinks is best to keep you safe and happy!) with yourself. And then notice what is it that’s going on?
Are you trying to flee from the situation? Are you trying to fight the situation? Or are you just freezing and don’t know what’s up, down, right or left and go into a slump?
From there, meet yourself where you're at to support yourself.
Watch a short video I put together to give you a little more info about fight, flight and freeze and tools that you can use to take those beneficial steps to down-regulate your nervous system so you can get that important work done, without causing yourselves even more stress and dis-ease.
How does fight/flight/freeze show up in your life? When you notice it, what do you do to support yourself? Send me a message in the comment box below and let me know!
