The Cranberries’ 1994 song Zombie came on in a café I was in while having a coffee with a friend a few days ago. It’s a great song and a powerful commentary on the Troubles of Northern Ireland, very haunting and yet also extremely catchy. The chorus has been stuck in my head since then,

“In your head, in your head

Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie

What's in your head, in your head?

Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie-ie, oh”

The constant repeat of the chorus got me thinking about my own troubles of getting stuck in my head with anxious thoughts, limiting beliefs and negative self talk over the years. When this happens I do, in some ways, become Zombie-effied. I struggle to connect with others or to focus on tasks at hand or remember what someone has told me, I feel tired but I don’t sleep well, and I feel like I move sluggishly throughout my day. Have you ever noticed this, too?

When we get stuck in our head, we lose connection from the physical and the present and our body’s nervous system lives in its stress response. It doesn’t rest. It can’t digest well. And we just keep pushing forward without much of an idea of what is happening around us. “Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie-ie”

So how do we stop ourselves from getting to that zombie point? How do we start to connect to the present and the physical in a supportive way?

Through consistent, daily check-ins and short but powerful routines that pull us back into our bodies and into the present moment, reminding our nervous system that it’s okay to calm, rest and relax.

One great way to pull yourself out of your head and back into your body is to shake. Shaking is a fantastic way to release pent-up energy which in turn helps focus the mind and helps us feel calmer. Here's a short Instagram Live I did to walk you through:
