I’m sitting outside on my terrace writing this. The skies are blue and the sun is warm! I can really feel that we’re turning the page and entering warmer months. That’s not to say that our weather will be sunny from here on out… it’s Asturias, which means you never know whether the sun or the rain will prevail, and the weatherman often gets it wrong. But the warmth of the sun today is a good sign things are changing!
I originally sat down at my desk to write this, looking longingly outside and not really paying attention to my work. Then I realized how silly that was, I can take my laptop outside and write you, instead! So here I am.
And it got me thinking how important it is to pivot things when we need to and change things up to suit us best in that moment.
This is one thing I constantly tell people who join me in my sessions, private and group, and in my online studio. It’s not about looking a certain way or doing something a certain way, it’s about how it works for you in that moment. Starting where you’re at and building from there is incredibly important, and I’m not just talking about in a yoga class, but with everything.
This isn’t always easy to do, because many of us struggle to connect with ourselves and communicate honestly with ourselves. This is why yoga and meditation can be so powerful. Because we begin to create a relationship with our breath and body and little by little we take steps to connect with ourselves on a deeper level.
And I’m not just pulling this out of nowhere. Bessel van der Kolk, psychiatrist, researcher, founder of Brookline Trauma Center Massachusetts, and author of The Body Keeps the Score said,
“Yoga turns out to be a terrific way to (re)gain a relationship with the interior world and with it a caring, loving, sensual relationship to the self.”
I discussed this in my Tea with Tess this week (my little chats I give every Monday over a cup of tea on Instagram Live!). I asked for people to add their opinions in the comments below or direct message me with their thoughts. And I absolutely loved a response I got from my good friend and past pregnancy private student, Claire:
"I think working from where you are in the moment is really important. Having been through much therapy, I learnt that if you wait until you are ‘in the right place’, you could be waiting forever because when is that?! Some of the best work on ourselves and getting to know what makes us tick happens when we are perhaps in more difficult moments. They allow us to be vulnerable and take a deeper look at what is going on for us. From there, we can work to a happy healthier life."
Isn't this amazing!? I totally and completely agree with her.

So as we move into May, I’d love to invite you to take a little more time to connect with yourself and start to truly do you.
If you’re not sure where to start, book a 15 minute free call with me and let’s work together to help you start making those steps!
