What words usually come up when you think about yourself?

I was talking the other day to a client who struggles with connecting to her inner voice in a way that is supportive and empowering. When we started working together, her go to inner voice was often destructive, down-putting and “horrible to myself.” (She gave me permission to share her words.) Over the last few weeks we have been working together to start to reframe and retrain the way she talks to herself, so she’s more of her best friend than her worst enemy.

You may identify with my client, I know a lot of us struggle with negative inner voices—myself included! And while it isn’t always easy, there are tools we can use to help us reconnect in a supportive and compassionate way.

One of the tools that I have shared with her is what I want to share with you today. My client has found this exercise extremely beneficial and I hope you will too.

I call it the Empowerment Jar

  1. Take an empty jar (or glass) and every day over the next week write one or two words (or more!) that make YOU feel good on a slip of paper and drop them into the jar. At the end of each day, pull out the words and read them out loud to yourself before you go to bed. Examples of positive words might be: powerful, prosperous, loved, resilient, flourishing, inspirational, enough
  2. Notice how the words sit with you. Don’t judge it, observe with compassion. If there are words that don’t quite suit you in the moment, that’s okay, just release them back into the jar.
  3. The more you do this, the more the words fill up, the easier it becomes for your brain to a) think of more empowering words and b) accept them. I like reading the words right before bed, because these empowering words rest in the mind throughout the night. You could also read them again first thing in the morning to help give you a boost throughout your day.
  4. Do this for one week, being as consistent as possible but don’t beat yourself up if you miss a day. Notice how you feel by the end of the week. Notice if there are any changes in the way you talk to yourself.

Let me know how this works for you! I’d love to hear about your experience with it!

And I’d also love to invite you to join me for the Power Up Your Voice Summit that starts in September. Myself and four other amazing top expert coaches will be there to inspire you to start to connect with your own authentic voice in a way that helps you feel seen, heard and empowered!

Over the course of the week you will hear our firsthand experiences and learn practical strategies for prioritizing your self-care, resilience, and connection. And the best part is, the summit is FREE!
