A Calming Breath Technique: Bee Breath (Bhramari Pranayama)

Holidays can feel like a mad dash to the finish line and can be a pretty stressful time (even if a very beautiful time!), so make sure you take care of yourself!
Do you have a technique you turn to to help your body & mind relax when you’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed? I often turn to my breath to help me come back into the present moment and de-stress.
Vagal nerve stimulation is an amazing internal resource we have that turns on our calm response (parasympathetic nervous system), especially important for when we’re feeling stressed and anxious. And one way we can do that is through our breath. There are many breath techniques, but the one I want to share with you right now is called Bhramari pranayama or Bee breath.

And you might be thinking, BEE as in 🐝?? And yup! that’s correct. It’s called this because you make a humming sound, like a drone bee, as you exhale. The humming sends vibrations through the head, throat and upper body, and increases the length of the exhale, all of which help stimulate the vagus nerve and in turn leaves you feeling calmer and more at ease.
Here’s a quick (and fun, if I do say so myself) video to lead you through it.
Cool Tip!: Bhramari pranayama or Bee breath can also be very useful in relieving headaches! Try it 5-6 times in a row and see if the tension in your head has released a bit!
If you'd like to learn more breath techniques to down-regulate the nervous system, feel calmer and more focused, come join me on January 14th for the Breath Reset Workshop! Breathwork has been proven to help relieve stress and anxiety, let me show you how to integrate it into your daily life!
