Our habits have a profound impact on our physical, mental and emotional health.

Have you read James Clear’s book, Atomic Habits? If not, it’s a good read and I highly recommend it. He said this about habits and it really resonates with me and I hope it will resonate with you, too:

A Habit That’s Helped Me

Writing out things I’m grateful for every day. These are often really small things that before I would have completely over looked: like the fact that I am incredibly grateful for warm, fuzzing slipper socks so my feet don’t freeze on the cold wood floors in our flat. Whenever I have a bit of a rocky moment, it helps me to remember that I have so many wonderful things in my life and I focus on them.

And here’s a geeky tidbit: Did you know that practicing gratitude helps us persevere longer during challenging tasks? So cool!

A New Habit I’m Working On

I started writing down and reading out supportive affirmations a couple months ago. I was noticing that I was slipping into and ruminating on negative self-talk more and more. So, I started pinpointing the limiting beliefs that were coming up and writing down affirmations to help me reframe my negative self-talk. And honestly, it has helped me SO MUCH! I feel so much more secure in myself, my work and my relationships than I did a couple months ago.

If you’re not sure what I mean, here’s a personal example. I have bouts (as so many professionals and entrepreneurs do) of imposter syndrome, “I’m not good enough!” So one of the affirmations I write down and say out loud to myself is, “I am enough.”

It may seem silly, but honestly, affirmations are incredibly beneficial for our holistic well-being. (And yes, the science backs me up on this).

Now please don’t get me wrong with all of this, it’s also important for us to acknowledge how we are feeling—the good and the bad—without judgment. It’s okay to not be okay. But by integrating habits like writing out gratitude, supportive affirmations and meditating on loving-kindness can be incredibly powerful for us live a happier, healthier life.
