The Power of Prioritizing Rest
Tess Jewell-Larsen | OCT 1, 2023
I’m here to offer you a reminder (one I need often need as well):

We often have this idea that resting is weak or lazy. I personally grew up with the motto: You can rest when you’re dead. Our modern society tends to pride itself in the extra work put in and in how much we have to do.
But, by prioritizing rest, we see the positive ripple effects in our life—from our physical and mental health, to our ability to connect with and support those around us. Resting is crucial to our health and well-being.
When you don’t take time to rest, your body stays in a fight or flight response, which takes a toll on everything from your blood pressure to muscle tension to bone health to mental health. Stress is one of the major instigators for a lot of our modern diseases.
When we prioritize rest, we stimulate the rest and digest part of our nervous system, which allows the body to heal and rejuvenate from the inside out.
By practicing balanced breathing techniques, mindfulness, gentle stretching and movement, and practices like restorative yoga and Yoga Nidra, we tap into that slower state of being.
Rest and a slower state of being helps to…
✨ lower your cortisol (stress hormone)
✨ lower your blood pressure & heart rate
✨ improve your digestion
✨ improve your immune function
✨ reduce risk of injury
✨ reduce sensations of pain and discomfort
✨ improve your quality of sleep
✨ improve your flexibility (when you’re always in fight/flight mode, you’re going to be tight)
